Of course, 2014, last year, was the hottest year ever recorded. 2015 is going to break that record dramatically. An El Niño event is a release of heat through the Pacific Ocean by the equator. This warm upwelling is especially noticeable off the coast of South America. This adds extra heat to our global temperatures and we're right in the middle of an El Niño event right now.
